Remedies That Will Help You Get Rid of Heartburn Quickly

Heartburn is a condition that occurs once in awhile in some people and chronically in others. No matter how often you have it, though, it is very painful, and you can't help but wonder how to get rid of heartburn once it attacks. For mild cases, there are simple ways to remedy the situation. More serious cases, however, require medical expertise and lifestyle changes, because there can be deeper, underlying causes. For most people, though, heartburn is not dangerous even if it is very uncomfortable, and it is possible to get rid of the problem for good.

If you're at home and caught unaware the first time you experience heartburn, you can use this simple method to make the symptoms go away. Start with 2 drinking cups. Fill one completely with cold water while filling the other one only 2" full. Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda to the smaller amount and stir well. It's going to taste kind of nasty, so quickly drink the smaller portion. Follow it with the full glass of water which will help take the taste out of your mouth. Although this remedy can be momentarily unpleasant, it will quickly get to the root of your problem, and the pain will subside.

Even if you've never had an attack of heartburn, you can be prepared by purchasing a bottle of antacid tablets, such as Tums. Store brands are very inexpensive and work just as well as the name brands. These tablets are full of calcium to promote strong bones and teeth, and they come in fruit flavors that really don't taste too bad. If you start feeling the burning in your chest that accompanies the onset of heartburn, chew two antacids, and they will give you almost immediate relief. If you have occasional bouts, you can carry the tablets easily in your pocket or purse in order to have some on hand just in case.

There are many other types of over-the-counter heartburn medications you can choose from, too. These include Alka-Seltzer, Milk of Magnesia, Amphojel, Maalox, Mylanta, Gaviscon, and Pepto-Bismol.

All of these medicines offer fast relief from the symptoms of heartburn with little, if any, side effects. However, to find out how to get rid of heartburn that is more severe and more frequent, you will need to forego these medications and consult with your doctor for a prescription-strength medicine.
